The second CD release from LoCura is Semilla Caminante (Travelling Seed), a step forward in production and stylistic values. The San Francisco Bay Area group, which fuses Latin sounds including flamenco, son and cumbia with ska and rock influences, recorded the CD this year with the help of Tori Amos’ bass player, co-producer/engineer Jon Evans. The production was funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign.
LoCura is fronted by Spanish-American Kata Miletich, a dynamic singer and the group’s song lyricist. Kata’s bilingual lyrics deal with social justice, healing and building community, immigration, the power of women, and spreading the seed of societal change (hence the album title). All the songs on Semilla Caminante were written by LoCura.
Musically, the group draws on the ethnic, cultural and musical diversity of the Bay Area. Although the core of the music is Latin, many other elements filter in. And the band cites widespread influences such as Lila Downs, Ozomatli, Ojos de Brujo, Zap Mama, and Manu Chao among numerous other sources.
Over the last seven years, the band has built a loyal following in the Bay Area, regularly filling clubs such as The Elbo Room, The Independent and The New Parish in Oakland. Earlier this year, they toured the Southwest and have ventured across the border several times for gigs in Tijuana, Baja California. Recently they entertained the encampment at Occupy San Francisco.
